Keep in mind different cars have different levels of difficulty. I'm not saying the $1300 is justified for that car, but there is a huge difference between tinting some cars then others.

So to just have a flat rate of $250 for a 4 door sedan isn't exactly fair on the installation side of things either.

alberts316 reacted to Tintguy1980 in Recommendations needed: High VLT + Glare Reduction + Visual Clarity?
I recommend you not buy a film product based on near infrared reduction number, rather buy based on TSER (total solar energy rejected) or SHGC (solar heat gain coefficient). The higher the TSER, the better and the lower the SHGC, the better. Both these parameters include near infrared reduction, visible light reduction and ultraviolet light reduction capacity.

Near infrared is not heat; it is part of the electromagnetic radiation produced by the sun. Other radiation in terms of window film performance is visible and ultraviolet light. All three, NIR, VL, and UV, convert to far-infrared once they strike and is absorbed by any material. Far-infrared is known as 'heat'.

Compare the performance parameters of any film product using TSER or SHGC while noting which has the best visible light transmission (VLT) number that may suit your desire.

Personally, I would recommend a dual-reflective film product with a VLT in the range of 25-35% such as can be found in Vista, LLumar, 3M and Suntek brand. Avoid ceramic (including dual-reflective ceramic) if you live in the South, for they carry too high a solar absorption rate that would radiate inward off the surface it is applied to, toward the air conditioned room. Heat always seeks cold. Best to have more solar energy reflected than absorbed.

If the home is in higher elevations, film products with high absorption rates may pose a problem in terms thermal stress on the glazing system except in the case of high performance lowE glazing (aka lowE2, lowE3 or lowE4), which already has great performance values before film is applied.

    Good luck.

alberts316 reacted to Exact-Oh in 2020 BMW 3-Series panel modifications
Bad news.  BMW stopped using their typical top panel clips starting in 2020 on the 3- series at least, requiring a full panel removal.

I'm not sure about 2019 models yet, but I own a 2018, and that car has the top clips we all know and love.

For the 2020, there are 2 screws to remove; one behind the door handle and one under the arm rest (no need to remove the arm rest,  it's hard to see underneath there).

The perimeter clips are what I call the 'VW' style clips, except for one standard clip.   They're the 2- stage panel clips that must be popped out before reassembling the panel on the door.

Take care on the brake light,  that's like earlier models with the cover popping down, starting in the rear, and the lamp itself has clips on each side, close to the glass, that must be slid out towards the side, away from the lamp.

Simple car still, but I'll be missing the old top panel clips, negating the requirement to pull the panels.

Pretty straight forward vehicle. All 4 doors just pull back on the top (no screws) so you can lift out the sweep. Front doors have retainer pop at about 4" down up by the front mirror corner that helps if you pop it out. Need to have somone pull the ouside top of the rear door panel out just a bit so you can get the front corner of the panel to hook around the upright door frame when putting the panel back over the sweep, but other than that a pretty simple vehicle.

If you think something like - "I don't need to say who I am" - that is 150% true. But it still leaves those words as being meaningless.

Nothing like this would leave my shop.  Perfect? No.  Can you find more than a few specs on anything worth tinting? Absolutely not.  You would have to be nose printing 99% of my work to find anything.

This tint job could be done better by any beginner that has any skill level!

I'll rephrase and say that if you think this is acceptable then you need to quit!

If you think that is acceptable then I pity your clients!  The amount of contamination is ridiculous. It isn't just a few specs and isn't something that needs to dry out!

I would say 90% of those clips break or have already been broke on those cars. I always test the interior handles to make sure they are not already loose before I remove panel. Like Alberts316 said, you can use a zip tie to hold it back up to the handle. I actually have drilled two small holes in the plastic on the handle to run 2 zip ties through in an X pattern to keep it close.

you can put a zip tie on that and it will work again.  Had the same issue on a 86 civic last week.

I'd say it looks like the window seal is broken. at that age its likely that the seal would have failed regardless of tint being applied.

Two things that I've learned since I've been in this business. Within 5 minutes of meeting another installer. 1 they'll tell me how fast they are. 2 how much money they make. Funny thing is generally neither is true.
