Have been doing tinting for a few years and want to broaden the scope of work. Received a sample from venture tape paint protection. Didnt receive any instuctions with this - and in South Africa it is still new - not any guys with experience that I know of. Anyway, I followed the basic principles of installing tinting film. You know - cleaning the surface extremely well - squeegie etc. Then adding a soapie solution on the back of the film - well you get th ehang of it. Am I very far out ? Some help on basiscs please!!!! Can I use the heat gun to mold the roundings etc. Most of the customers have asked for strips of film and I dont intend to perform a full wrap …

Please Help!! Can't get paid!

Hi all, I have a problem. I own my own PDR business, and decided to do some contract work for another dent company. The other company landed a hail gig out of state. My business partner went along with the guys from the other company to do the hail work. Meanwhile I stayed back home to cover both my existing dealer accounts, and the other company's dealer routes. Now it has been a few months, and I still haven't gotten paid from either the hail, or the dealer work that we did. We only had a verbal agreement. Is there anything that I can legally do to get my money out of this company? Even if I only get the money for the dealer route that I covered. (The dealer …

The PDR Trainee Blues

This is my first post in the PDR forum so I'll introduce myself and say, Hi Guys, I've been a pro polisher/refinisher for a little over 20 years so I've been cutting orange-peel and scratches out of paint for long enough. The ultimate goal of a professional polisher is the ability to see right into the orange-peel or highs and lows of paint finishes and wet-sand the highs out, then start the multi-stage machine compound process that will eventually create the glass-like 'superfinish'. So in looking at it from my perspective, "orange-peel" actually resembles thousands of 'very small dents' on a single panel so I thought I'd be a shoe-in for PDR, right? Well I gotta hand it…

I am no longer working for ****. I parted ways with them this week. I started my own company and will be hitting the streets looking for work this week. I also found out that another x-**** tech has been taken to court over his contract recently and the judge barred him from his prior accounts that he serviced while working for ****, but he is allowed in any other **** accounts. This is great news for all the techs who were scared to go into **** accounts around here. The best part, the local **** manager, who is a real d*ckhhead, was there in court and was pretty pissed off about the judges decision. ...More good news, another 5 year plus tech has given his notice and …

I know we don't like to talk about price. I have started my tint biz 8 mos ago and want to plaster my van with an ad. I'm on a budget but a wrap looks so good I want to do it myself. What's a rough figure to have someone print it for me? Even if its not the entire van just sides? Thanks!

Reflector Boards

Im gonna get myself a reflector board but there seems to be a few different ones available. Ive seen them in Orange/White/Black and with either a magnet or pumped suction cup underneath. Are the different colours for working on different coloured panels and im guessing the suction versions are for when you need to mount it onto a vehicle with a plastic panel. Thanks in advance

Non-Compete Clause In exchange for training ? 1 2
by Guest REFLECTIONS- 12 replies

Hello across the board, I?ve been ?sandbagging? for a while now & have really learned quite a lot just being here. Thank you all for sharing your knowledge so freely. One question on the subject of ?earning one?s wings? I have been seriously considering signing a non-compete clause with one of the country?s best tech-training co. just to get what I believe is the best training. But I?m just wondering, what is your opinion on doing so? I think that the exposure & learning curve would be at a maximum level for me but what is the norm here? 2-3 Yrs. In all parts of the country? Last time I talked to an attorney on this I was told that it couldn?t hold-up in court…

if you happen to be looking for work in ****** I'd suggest you stay away from ********, these guys are crazy, misorganized and as crooked as they come. I worked with them until he kept trying to make me sign a no comp clause that was totally one sided. when asking around the other techs had not signed one and he grave me static because I told him I wanted a lawyer to look over it (seeing how he never gave me a strait answer on how much I'd be making and what I would make weekly.. this guy is nuts he tried to tell me I only made 400 a week *on payday (EVERY TWO WEEKS) and only made 25 dollars a headliner! but if I broke it I bought it wtf.. I parted ways with this bozo…

Hi -- great site! I hope you guys can give me some much needed advice. I'm working solo in a very competitive market, dominated by two major players in the field. Most dealerships are "sewed up" by these guys. I'm totally mobile, lettering on truck, using cell phone. My source of business hast mostly been from a couple of carwash facilities, mom & pop dealers and word of mouth. I'd welcome any ideas on growing my business. Need some new ideas for advertising and new sources of business...been distributing brochures at car washes...have ad coming out in yellow pages. What I'd like to find is a few steady streams of customers. I'm getting tired of beating the…

Well, I was just browsing and found this site and have read a few post, exciting to find a new PDR forum. Just to give a little background on myself, I have been in PDR for 13 years and have always done hail exclusively. It is a very tough and competitive business, and growing more difficult every year. I have owned my business since I finished my apprenticship in 93, but there is nothing like having a business that owns you . Later

to start on my own, what do I need?
by Guest disgruntled wiz- 2 replies
- 3.8k views
I am planning to leave the wiz in the next few months. I plan to start my own PDR company, but not go into the wiz's accounts. I wpould like to know what I need to get started as far as owning my own buisness. I know I will need some type of "garage insurance" to work on peoples cars. Can someone recommend a company that operates in NJ and PA? Also, do I need a buisness checking account and do I need to officially form a buisness in the state I plan to do buisness in? Just a little help needed to get started here, thanks.

Hello I am a novice PDR tech that has been reading alot of the very helpful info on this post. I have job next week on a late 90's Nissan Altima roof. I am looking on some advice on fast easy access to speed up my repair. Also I don't do very much outside work and it is very cold this time of year. Is using a heat gun on the damaged area advised, and what is the best way to light my reflector board?

New here, seeking contract advice...
by Guest disgruntled wiz- 3 replies

I have been in the PDR biz for roughly 6 years. I was trained by some of the oldest and best in the country and worked for a small mom/pop company when I started. About 2 years later, we were bought out be <edit>. We were told that things would stay the same and we get all of the benefits of DW while keeping our higher pay from the original company. Now it has been a few years and I'v pretty much had it with <edit>. They are constantly cutting back to save money and its affecting us more each day. Bottom line is that I want to find a way out. I have never been to their basic training, I dont use their useless tools (I use A-1 tools), I am still going to the sa…

I want to try messing around with a hood on a stand to practice (just getting a feel for dragging the tool etc) before I commit to a big set. Any idea what tools to start with, I just want to buy a couple of them. A pointed end? A larger tip? How long, what bend etc. I know most shapes are for access and since I am practicing on a hood access is not an issue. Thanks!
